Happy Valentine's Day to everyone!
Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone!

February is the month to celebrate Valentine’s Day every 14. Aren’t you wondering how this cam about? There are various stories about the history of Valentine’s Day celebration.

Romans celebrated Lupercalia on February 15 to ward off the danger of wolves to their flocks and some people think that Valentine’s Day is based on this festival.

During third century Rome under Emperor Claudius II, he forbade young men from marrying so they could serve in the army. But a priest named Valentine secretly married young couples. Upon learning of this, Emperor Claudius II ordered the imprisonment of Valentine and later put to death. It was said that the young couples whom Valentine married gave flowers and letters to him while he was in prison.

In another legend, Valentine was said to be a prisoner who fell in love with the daughter of his captor. Before being put to death, he wrote the lady a letter expressing his love and signed “Your Valentine”. The most famous person from Valentine’s Day is Cupid, son of Venus, goddess of love. He is often represented as a mischievous boy who goes around wounding gods and humans, causing them to fall in love. His Greek counterpart is Eros, god of love.

Valentine’s Day comes in second to Christmas Day as the day when many greeting cards are sent.

Peace and love to you.
