Oatmeal every morning. The thought sometimes solicits a frown from both adults and children. They will go for waffles, cereals and pancakes, but not oatmeal. What they don’t realize are the important health benefits, this seemingly small earth produce gives to everyone. Let’s start!

Lowers blood cholesterol level

Oatmeal is a very good source of soluble fiber, which is also found in apples, pears, prunes and barley. Soluble fiber inhibits the body’s absorption of low-density-lipoprotein, or LDL, which is known as the bad cholesterol. Eating just one-and-a-half cup of oatmeal each morning, contains more than five grams of fiber, enough to reduce cholesterol level.

Reduces risk of high blood pressure

Eating one bowl of oatmeal or whole grain cereal per day is recommended for postmenopausal women who have the tendency to develop high blood pressure level because of hormones deficiency. Men too can also reduce the risk of heart disease by consuming oatmeal on a daily basis.

 Rich in Antioxidants

Avenanthramides is a special type of antioxidants and oatmeal is full of this. Avenanthramides fight off free radicals that attack high-density lipoproteins, or HDL, which is known as the good cholesterol. These also protect LDL cholesterol from oxidizing from copper, which reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Avenanthramides also prevents the arteries from hardening. Vitamin C intake enhances the benefits of oatmeal.

Stabilizes Blood Sugar

Fiber in oatmeal stabilizes blood sugar level as it acts like a sponge and flashes out later excess glucose from eating high carbs. Once the sugar level is stabilized, diabetes is not a scary illness anymore. Add low fat milk to your oatmeal everyday is beneficial too.

Boosts the Immune System

The beta-glucan fiber contained in oatmeal helps the immune cells regenerate and fights bacterial infection.

Prevents weight gain

Because oatmeal is so rich in fiber, it will make you fuller for a longer period of time. Fiber will increase the viscosity of the stomach’s contents so that it will take longer to empty. Feeling full for a longer period of time will also prevent the need to snack on sugary or salty foods throughout the day.

My hubby’s trying to lose some weight, so I cook oatmeal for him every morning. He actually loves it. I make sure to buy rolled oats, because the texture’s so much better than the instant kind. 🙂

I don’t know if he’s losing weight yet, but I’m glad to know that it has so many other benefits. 🙂

to be honest, I never liked oatmeal. it has a taste that I don’t really like. I prefer cornflakes over it. but I’ll try to eat more and more especially that there’s a lot of recipes online about it. 🙂

I used to dislike eating oatmeal, but eventually started to enjoy it because of my brother’s encouragement. My favorite is having it with sliced bananas. It’s truly a healthy breakfast alternative and I’m sure there are more ways to add excitement to it as long as we become experimental. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

I’m aware of the benefits of oatmeal. I’m not such a huge fan though. So whenever we have it for breakfast, I just add fruits to make it taste better.

I used to eat oatmeal before, and I have to agree with what you said here. It’s a very nutritious one. And I think I also can attest that “postmenopausal women” since my mother was considered as one, and was a habitual oatmeal eater. Hahaha!

I usually come across oatmeal section in groceries abroad (my hometown) but never grabbed a box because I find it like dry and maybe tasteless? I thought it was just some cereal but knowing there are a lot of benefits from it, I’ll give it a try. Thanks for sharing!

I like oatmeal, not the instant one, specially when I add some bananas and milk. My mom has a slight heart problem recently and she’s having oatmeal everyday to regulate her heart condition.

And to complement with the above information, you might saw a flavored oatmeal, usually sold by Quaker. Buy the original one, not the flavored or if you could find a natural oatmeal (not branded) go for that. There’s an ingredient in Quaker oats that we don’t know and they don’t reveal.

I wish I could still eat oats, but for two months now I’ve been doing a Low Carb High Fat diet which eliminates any carbs or starchy food. We can only have 50g of carbs per day. And from the moment I started that I lost 20kgs! It’s amazing!
